A Letter to Request Flexible Working (which may also be called flextime working or just flextime) is a document by which an employee can ask their employer for more flexible working options.

In the United States, there is no right to flextime, but work culture is changing and many employers have begun to consider flextime working arrangements. Flextime could mean a fully work-at-home schedule, it could be a schedule where the employee comes in and leaves at different hours, it could be a partial work-at-home schedule or any other combination of factors whereby the employee is not working the traditional 9 AM to 5 PM schedule inside a traditional office.

This letter is drafted so that the employee may give the employer some background on the benefit of flextime working schedules and then ask for consideration of the specific request as desired.

How to use this document

This document can be used in any situation where an employee would like to request a flextime arrangement. The specifics of the arrangement and the schedule don't have to be known, as this letter will provide great background for the employer to consider the request.

In this letter, the employee will enter basic contact information for themselves and the company. Then the employee will be asked what type of flextime arrangement they are looking for: work-from-home, coming and going at different hours, both, or something else entirely.

If the employee chooses work-from-home or a timing flex arrangement, a series of questions will be asked to better include specifics in the letter.

If it's something else, the employee will be given space to describe their desired arrangement.

After this document is filled out, it should be printed, signed, and copied. One copy may be sent to the employer and one kept with the employee. It can also be digitally signed and emailed, which might be more convenient for all parties.

Applicable law

Letters to request flextime in the United States are not subject to any specific laws. Unless a party is requesting flextime for something like maternity leave, employers in the United States are not required to consider any specific type of flextime arrangement.
