Roommate Agreement

For instance, a Roommate Agreement is used when two or more people want to live together in a rental unit and share common spaces, such as the living room, kitchen, bathroom, or even bedroom.

This agreement outlines the required expectations of the roommate, including rules for quiet hours, use and cleaning of shared spaces, visitors or guests in the rental unit, as well as specific rules as to whether animals are allowed on the premises as pets.

This document is necessary to prevent disputes among roommates about living requirements. With this document, basic expectations are written, and every roommate knows what to expect from the beginning before agreeing to live together.

How to use this document

This document should be used when two or more people want to live together in a single rental unit and want to have the expectations of each roommate in writing.

These expectations will include:

• how much rent, security deposit, and utilities each roommate will pay,
• the payment terms, including the date and how parties can make payment, and
• general rules on how the roommates should use the shared spaces.

After completing the document, it should be printed and circulated to the roommates, who should read and sign it. Alternatively, the roommates can sign the document electronically. After signing, each roommate should keep a signed copy of this document for their record.
