This Resignation Letter is an official document by which a service provider end their retainer or resign from a gig. This document can be used by parties who are service providers to an organization to terminate their contract. As professionals or freelancers engaged for specific services, there comes a time when we decide to quit the work, and when that time comes, it is important to resign the right way. Please, note that this document is for freelancers or service providers/independent contractors who want to cancel their gigs or retainer before the expiration date.

Also, note that an employee is different from a service provider in the sense that the service provider is contracted for their skills and is not entitled to employment benefits, such as bonus, paid vacation, e.t.c. This document is different from the Employee Resignation Letter, which should be used by employees alone.

Usually, contracts specify the notice requirements should the client or service provider decide to end the contract before its termination. Hence, before deciding to quit, the service provider should check their Service Agreement, Freelance Agreement, Retainer Agreement, or other contracts to ensure they comply with the notice requirement.

For example, the contract might require the service provider to provide one month's notice of resignation. This means that the service provider will inform their client one month before the date the service provider will stop providing their services to the client.


How to Use this Document

This document can be used by a service provider who intends to end their contract. The service provider must ensure that any requirement for notice of resignation is complied with. That is, the service provider must ensure that appropriate notice is given where required.

This document requires basic information such as:

  • the name of the sender (service provider)
  • and the recipient (the client),
  • the date the service provider will stop working for the client, and
  • why the service provider is resigning (optional).

After filling out this document, the employee/service provider must sign the document and deliver it to the employer or client. The employee/service provider should keep a copy for record purposes.

The general rules of contract are applicable. The Nigerian Labour Act is also applicable.
