An End of Probation Letter is a document that tells an employee who has been on probation that their probation has ended. Probation is a period of trial for a new recruits. The purpose of this is to review the employee's job performance and ability to learn and understand the job they are required to do.

Probation lasts for a specific period depending on the Employment Offer Letter, Employment Contract, or other policies of the employer. However, in practice, probationary periods might be between three to six months. At the end of the probation, the employee's performance will be reviewed, and the employer will determine if the employee will continue their employment or if the employment will be terminated. In other words, if the employee has successfully completed the probation, the employer will retain the employee. On the other hand, if the probation is unsuccessful, the employee's employment will be terminated.

How to use this document

If the probation was unsuccessful and the employee's employment will be terminated, the employer must comply with any legal requirement regarding employment termination before sending the letter. For example, adequate notice should be given to the employee. This means that the employee should provide this letter early enough or provide payment in lieu of notice.

If the probation has been successful, the employer does not need to comply with any notice requirement. The employer should simply complete this form, print, sign, and send it to the employee. The document may be delivered via email, and the person sending the letter should keep a copy of the letter for record purposes.

Applicable law

The Labour Act (Cap L1 LFN 2004) is a federal legislation that regulates employment matters in Nigeria.
