A Recommendation Letter (also called a Letter of Recommendation) is exactly what it sounds like: a letter written to provide a recommendation for another person. It can be used in a variety of contexts. The person that is the subject of the letter may be applying to university, to some kind of club or society, or even for a new job.
Please note, that while this letter can be used for employment situations, it is designed as a general letter which addresses a person's qualities and suitability for various roles. For example, it can even be prepared by a friend, mentor or coach in order to recommend someone for many different roles (including for employment). However, for strict employment situations, where one employer is confirming how long the employee has been employed, and is recommending that employee for a new job, we also have an Employment Reference Letter available.
There is no specific form for a Letter of Recommendation in Australia, but in general, it is a document which should include positive details about the person being recommended for the job. Normally, a Letter of Recommendation is written by someone who knows the applicant very well and can attest to their personality and skills.
In a Letter of Recommendation, the writer can provide a hearty recommendation of the subject of the letter for whatever position they are applying.
How to use this document
This document can be used in any situation where someone is requesting a Letter of Recommendation, whether it is for a new academic position, a club or society, new employment, or just a personal reference. This letter will provide background for how the sender of the letter knows the subject and will then give several options to help provide a glowing recommendation.
In this letter, the sender will be asked details about where the letter is going, as well as their own contact information. Then the sender will be asked details of their relationship with the subject of the letter, including the year they met and in what capacity. Finally, the sender will be asked about the subject's best qualities for the recommendation and be given a space to enter additional information as desired.
After this document is filled out, it can be printed and provided to the recipient. The sender, and the subject of the letter, may both keep copies for their own records.
Applicable law
Letters of recommendation in Australia are not subject to any specific laws. It is important, however, to always be truthful and accurate in the recommendation.
